Society Establishment

The Romanian Society in Cyprus was founded in 1995.
The Society, an independent organization, the first nucleus of solidarity of Romanians in Cyprus, was established within the context of the new policy of the Romanian government to mobilize the Romanian Diaspora. Furthermore, it was imperative to reawaken the feeling of national dignity and the desire to assert one’s national identity.

Main Objectives

One of the main objectives of the Society is to create an atmosphere of solidarity and brotherhood among the Romanians in Cyprus. In spite of its limited financial resources, the Society has offered financial support to people who were hard up. That is why, the contribution of each member, no matter how insignificant, is greatly valued. But above all, a voluntary and active participation in all our activities is appreciated. Financial help was offered by the Society to people in distress both in Romania and other countries. Thus, in January 2005, the amount of 513 Euros was deposited to the Cyprus Red Cross for the benefit of the victims of the Asian tsunami.

In July 2005 the amount of 703 Euros was deposited at the Metropolitan House of Banat for the people affected by floods in the Timisoara region and in December 2005 the amount of 1.121 Euros was deposited at the Patriarchate for the people affected in the Bucharest region. Another objective of the Society is to promote the Romanian culture and traditions in Cyprus. With a view to achieving this objective, cultural activities addressed to the Cypriot public, presenting different aspects or personalities of the Romanian cultural world are organized (see the page Cultural Activities)
