The Romanian School in Cyprus

The Romanian community in Cyprus is a young community, and the first generation of children is booming. In order to maintain our ethnic and linguistic identity the ability to use the language must be kept alive. Therefore, a Sunday school of Romanian language and civilization was an absolute necessity.

The Romanian School came into being in February 2004 with the initiative of the Society and the support of the then Ambassador, Mr Costin Georgescu. Since the beginning, headmistress of the school is Ms Christina Christodoulou. It started with a single class in Nicosia and in September 2004, a school was opened in Limassol too. At present there are 3 classes in Nicosia and 2 classes in Limassol. Classes are held every Saturday and the teachers are Ms Anca Cristina Pericleous in Nicosia and Ms Carmen Ioannou in Limassol. The School was self funded until 2007, when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved some financial support.

The main TV channel in Cyprus, RIK (CyBC) has presented the Romanian School in two programmes during which the school children presented places, customs, traditions, songs and Romanian cuisine. The programme scored a real success and was re-broadcast several times.
